Frequently Asked Questions
Is Everton Hall located on Campus?
No, but it is very close being a five minute stroll, through Kelburn Park, to the main campus and 10 – 15 minutes to the other campuses in the city. We are located conveniently in the middle of the different campuses.
How is Everton Hall managed?
By a full time Head of Hall who lives on the Everton site with his wife and two cats (official Everton rodent control officers) with invaluable assistance from two part time office administrators and four Residential Assistants.
Who can live at Everton Hall?
We do not normally take first year students unless there has been a gap, of at least a year, between them finishing college and coming to university. Many of our residents come here after a year in one of the catered halls and stay on for more than one year.
Can I bring a car?
Yes we have over 20 car parks which is generally enough to go around. A parking space is allocated to you and it costs $15 per week to reserve a car park. We can usually help out if you have a car for a few days such as a weekend.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes it is made up of various components which are two weeks rent paid in advance, administration and activity fees and $330 that is refundable minus charges such as the final electricity account; damage caused by you; unattributable damage; or damage that is shared by a flat or the Hall as a whole. Most people get the whole bond back apart from final electricity charge.
What if I can’t pay my account on time?
The best thing is to let us know so we can help you develop a plan. We are very understanding and helpful if we are told when the problem first emerges.
If I change my mind, how can I cancel my contract?
Simply by contacting us, by email or writing, as soon as possible. There may be penalty charges, if you change your mind, depending on how close it is to the start of the academic year so please read your contract carefully.
Will I be sharing a room?
No - All rooms at Everton Hall are singles – well almost all, we have two one bedroom flats that suit a couple.
Do I need to bring my own linen?
Yes, although we do have linen packs for purchase for $70.
What does my fee include?
Your fees pay for your room in a fully furnished flat. It does not include food or electricity.
Can I get Internet in my room?
Yes, all our bedrooms are wired for telephone/internet ports. You can “enliven” the connection yourself if you choose to.
What furniture and fittings are provided?
Each study bed room contains a bed, mattress and mattress protector plus a desk and chairs and ample wardrobe and drawer space. The kitchens are fully supplied with pots and pans and cutlery and crockery.
What do I need to bring with me?
Bedding, computer, drawing pins and Blu Tak for hanging up photos and posters, coat hangers, laundry basket and washing powder, torch, Mum’s favourite easy recipes and a positive attitude.
What shouldn’t I bring with me?
Candles, incense, oil burners, heaters, fridges and a selfish attitude.
What are my responsibilities as a member of the Hall?
Pay my rent on time, obey the Hall rules and contribute to the community to the best of my ability. Remember to have a good community is to be a good community member.
Can I have a friend come to stay?
Yes this is normally fine for a couple of days providing it is not in the first week of the academic year or during exam time.
How easy is it to get to the city?
Very easy. It is a five or ten minute stroll down the hill, depending on your walking speed, to the heart of the entertainment centre. Unfortunately that means that the walk home is uphill and takes longer!
How do I receive a parcel?
When a parcel arrives for you, we send you a text message notifying you that you have a parcel to collect at the office.
